Thailand bans smoking on 20 popular tourist beaches


#Bangkok: Those caught lighting up could face a year’s imprisonment as the government seeks to end pollution and drain damage on Thai beaches caused by discarded cigarette butts. The ban, which will come into play in November, will affect 20 beaches including Patong, Koh Khai Nok, Koh Khai Nai (Phuket); Hua Hin, Cha-Am, Khao Takiab (western province of Prachuap Khiri Khan); Pattaya, Jomtien, Bangsaen (eastern province of Chonburi) and Samila (Songkhla city). After a trial period, the ban is expected to be enforced on all Thai beaches, as well as on passenger and tourist boats, to tackle the problem of butts damaging the underwater environment. Anyone found to be breaking the law will face one year in jail or a maximum 100,000 baht fine, or both.


Qatar Airways to use A330 aircraft for Seychelles service


Qatar Airways will upgrade its service on Seychelles route to an A330 aircraft starting October 29 to meet rising passenger demand. In a statement, Qatar Airways noted that the 260-seater A330 aircraft will increase the airline’s current daily capacity by 130% on this route, connecting Seychelles-based passengers to more than 150 destinations globally.

Cathay Pacific plane forced to make emergency landing over fire warning


A Cathay Pacific flight from London to Hong Kong was forced to make an emergency landing in Russia because of a possible fire onboard. In a statement, the airline said: “Cathay Pacific Flight CX250 from London Heathrow to Hong Kong was diverted to Novosibirsk International Airport in Russia approximately six hours into its journey due to a signal in the flight deck that indicated a possible fire in the aft cargo hold. Passengers were being accommodated at hotels near the airport. Cabin crew were also providing necessary support, the airline added.

Pilots’ strike grounds 912 Lufthansa flights


Germany’s flagship carrier Lufthansa said it would cancel 912 flights on Thursday after nearly 900 flights were called off on Wednesday due to an ongoing pilot strike.
Out of its roughly 3,000 scheduled flights, 876 would be cancelled due to the strike, “affecting some 100,000 passengers”, Lufthansa said in a statement.
The Lufthansa pilots going on strike are demanding a pay rise of an average of 3.66% per year, retroactive for the past five years.

Emirates to charge fee for seat selection from October 3


Emirates will begin charging an advance seat selection fee ahead of its standard two-day check-in window for some of its Economy fares starting from October 3, the Middle East’s biggest airline has said. The new fee structure, ranging between Dh50 and Dh150, will apply to Economy Class Special and Saver fares , Emirates said. Seat charges will vary depending on the distance of the flight ..

Advance seating selection fees :

1 ) Short Haul: Dh50 between Dubai and GCC countries, Middle Eastern countries, Indian Ocean

2 ) Medium Haul: Dh100 between Dubai and Europe, Africa and East Asia

3 ) Long Haul: Dh150 between Dubai and Americas and Australasia

5th Freedom (Short and Medium Haul): Dh50 or Dh100 when Emirates flies between two foreign countries. A child discount of 50 per cent applies on the seat charges, as provided in a table with the charge breakdown.

Al Meroz Hotel Bangkok First halal food hotel opens in Thailand


After it was launched in November, Thailand’s first halal hotel is expected to help attract Muslim tourists and bolster the industry , one of the few bright spots in its economy. The Al Meroz, which boasts mosque-like architecture, has two prayer rooms and three halal dining halls. Rooms cost from 4,000 baht all the way up to 50,000 baht ($116 to $1,445) a night .
