Leaders of countries in South-east Asia on Thursday reacted strongly to US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to reverse a decades-old American policy and recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“I call on all Muslims across the world to let your voices be heard, make it clear that we strongly oppose any recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital for all time,” said Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak in his speech at an annual gathering of ruling party Umno in Kuala Lumpur.
His comments follow a statement by the Malaysian Foreign Ministry warning that the move by Mr Trump could result in grave repercussions toward the security and stability of the region, making efforts to combat terrorism all the more difficult.
Indonesian president Joko Widodo on Thursday condemned the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, reported newswire agency Reuters.
“Indonesia strongly condemns the United States’ unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and asks the US to reconsider the decision,” Mr Widodo told a news conference in Bogor. “This can rock global security and stability,” he said.

State media in Pakistan and China published official statements opposing US President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel’s capital. Pakistan shares the international outrage and is deeply concerned over the implications of this decision for international peace and security, especially in the Middle East.
